The short version
- Leggio translates text on your device, using the translation models built into Chrome. The text you translate is not sent to us or to anyone else.
- Your settings and the words you save are kept in your browser, on your computer.
- Leggio has no accounts, no servers and no analytics. We don’t collect, sell or share your data.
Text you translate
When you ask Leggio to translate a word or passage, Leggio passes that text to Chrome’s built-in Translator and Language Detector. Chrome runs the translation on your own computer. Leggio does not send the text, the page it came from or the page’s address to any server, ours or anyone else’s.
The same goes for PDFs: Leggio doesn’t upload the documents you read.
What Leggio stores
Leggio keeps two kinds of information, both in Chrome’s extension storage on your computer:
- Your settings, such as the languages you read and translate into, and your preferences.
- Your saved words: your vocabulary list, meaning the words and phrases you choose to save and any details saved along with them.
This information never leaves your device. It isn’t synced to an account, and we can’t see it.
What Leggio doesn’t collect
Leggio doesn’t collect any of the following:
- Your name, email address or any other account details. There are no accounts.
- Your browsing history or the addresses of pages you visit.
- The contents of pages or documents you read.
- Your location.
- Analytics, usage statistics, crash reports or any other telemetry.
- Advertising identifiers. Leggio shows no ads.
Chrome’s translation models
The first time you translate between a pair of languages, Chrome may need to download a translation model. Chrome handles that download itself, as it does for its other built-in features. The text you’re reading is not part of that request. Chrome’s own data practices are covered by Google’s privacy policy.
Permissions
The permissions Leggio requests are listed on its Chrome Web Store page, and Chrome shows them to you when you install it. Leggio uses them only to translate the text you select and to store your settings and saved words.
Deleting your data
Everything Leggio stores is on your computer, so you’re in control of it. Removing Leggio from Chrome (at chrome://extensions) deletes its settings and your saved words.
Children
Leggio is a general-audience tool. It doesn’t collect personal information from anyone, including children under 13.
This website
This website doesn’t use cookies, analytics or third-party scripts, and it serves its fonts from its own server. The demo on the home page runs entirely in your browser and doesn’t save anything. Our hosting provider may keep standard server logs, such as IP addresses and request times, to keep the site secure and running.
Changes to this policy
If we change how Leggio handles data, we’ll update this page and the effective date at the top before the change takes effect.
